💬 Project Overview

Lap Dogs is a family-friendly racing game where players compete in chaotic, ability-driven races.

Players select from four character classes Good Boi, Zoomy Boi, Chonky Boi, and Cool Boi each offering distinct abilities that influence racing strategies.

The design goal was to create a fast, readable, and engaging gameplay experience that works for both casual and competitive players.

🌱 Problem & Opportunity

Racing games with abilities and power-ups can become visually overwhelming during high-speed gameplay.

⚡️Challenges:

  • Communicating abilities and pickups clearly

  • Maintaining readability during fast-paced racing

  • Designing systems that support both casual and competitive players

  • Encouraging long-term engagement through progression

👩🏻‍💻 My Role

I led the UI/UX design across the full game experience, from menus and HUD design to gameplay systems.

Responsibilities

  • Designed UI/UX for Quick Play and Tournament modes

  • Created all in-game menus and gameplay HUD

  • Designed visual UI assets used during races

  • Collaborated with developers to ensure performance and feasibility

  • Iterated designs through gameplay testing

🏆 Project Scope / MVP

UI & Icons used in game

Designed and delivered UI screens and icon sets for core gameplay, working alongside a visual designer to maintain visual consistency (Shout out to James Supero!). Also work on some icon animation as a guide for dev team.

Character Classes

Four character types with unique abilities and play styles.

Abilities & Pickups

Skill-based power-ups used strategically during races.

Progression System

Experience Points and Kibble currency used to unlock characters, upgrades, and cosmetics.

Game Modes

Quick Play for casual matches and Tournament Mode for competitive events.

Tournament Mode Flow

Live Engagement

Monthly quests encouraging repeat play.

Exchange Flow

User can buy more token to join in the tournament

🎯 Our Solution

Gameplay readability

HUD and icon systems were designed to communicate abilities quickly during high-speed races.

Strategic decision support

Cooldown indicators and ability feedback helped players make better in-race decisions.

Engagement systems

Progression mechanics and quests encouraged long-term player retention.

⭐️ Outcome & Impact

Lap Dogs was successfully tested both internally and within the Shib community, with 200+ participants joining community playtesting sessions. The game officially launched in 2025 and is now publicly available to download.

Within the first week of release, Lap Dogs reached 1,000+ downloads, receiving positive feedback from the community on both gameplay experience and interface design.

This project provided valuable hands-on experience in designing real-time multiplayer game interfaces, strengthening my ability to think about responsiveness, clarity, and player interaction in fast-paced environments.

💡 Key Learnings

  • Balancing creativity with feasibility: Learned to adapt design ideas to technical constraints without losing core intent

  • Server-side awareness: Gained insight into how UI and gameplay systems can impact performance and scalability

  • Iterative collaboration: Early and frequent alignment with engineers helped surface constraints and refine designs faster This project strengthened my ability to design production-ready UI/UX within real development limitations while maintaining a playful, engaging player experience.
